Medical/Healthcare Interpreting 101 - a 40-hour online training for bilingual healthcare workers

The enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) ensures that language services – including oral interpreting and written translation1 – should be required in all new demonstration programs, payment systems, and models enacted as part of the ACA.
In an effort to ensure language access in healthcare both The Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and The Joint Commission have issued standards on cultural and linguistic appropriate services. If you are familiar with The National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in Health and Health Care and The Joint Commission Hospital Accreditation Standards on Patient-Centered Communication, then you already know that as a healthcare organization you need to deem your bilingual qualified to interpret to ensure effective communication is taking place. "Qualifications for language interpreters and translators may be met through language proficiency, assessment, education, training, and experience " (Joint Commission Standard HR.01.02.01). Also, CLAS Standard #3 states the importance to "recruit, promote, and support a culturally and linguistically diverse governance,leadership, and workforce that are responsive to the population in the service area".
Workshop/Course Description: This 40-hour training is designed for health organizations that use bilingual staff in a dual-role function as interpreters. The training prepares bilingual individuals who need basic training to be deemed qualified and competent to work as interpreters in the healthcare/medical sector.
In addition, this training provides a great preparation for those individuals who may decide to become certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters.
Learning objectives:
By preparing your bilingual staff on how to implement best practices when facilitating communication between your clinicians and Limited English Proficiency Patients, not only this training will help your organization reduce patient's unnecessary readmission (which is a key goal for most hospitals) by improving effective communication, but it will also help your organization:
* Reduce medical errors
* Increase patient satisfaction scores
* Reduce the amount of unnecessary testing (when unclear on symptoms, doctors tend to run more tests to confirm or dismiss possible diagnosis)
* Increase patient flow in and out of hospitals
* Become the preferred choice among non-English speaking communities

- Understand healthcare and medical terminology, including body systems, medical specialties, medical tests, diagnostic procedures and treatment
- Learn the most current legislation and regulations both at national and California state level
- Understand roles, protocols, standards and ethics that guide interpreters on how to prepare for and manage an interpreting encounter, interact with other healthcare professionals and demonstrate cultural responsiveness and competence.
- Practice Interpreting modes in English and the language of service

The 40-hour training is typically offered over the course of 5 consecutive days, but modifications can be made to meet client's need.
Each training day typically runs from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
